Keeping Your Cat Protected from Parasites

Dr. Jason McClellan

What are the main parasites that affect cats?

The main parasites that we see in cats, similar to dogs, are intestinal parasites, which they pick up by eating things outside. Heartworm, similar to a dog, is transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms are a little different, but it can be a significantly problematic disease in your cat that is now easy to prevent.

Flea infestations can be massively problematic in terms of allergies, skin infections, infecting other pets in your house, and tick-borne diseases.

What products are available for parasite prevention in cats?

Over the years, we've had a variety of products available for our pets and cats, with variable effectiveness. Most times they weren't overly effective unless you used multiple different types. They also had a significant number of safety issues, which were problematic, including causing neurological and gastrointestinal upset in our cats.

What is the best parasite prevention for cats?

Nowadays, we have prescription-level flea, tick, heartworm, and intestinal parasite all-in-one preventives that are very safe and effective for our feline loved ones, especially those that go outside or live with dogs or other cats that go outside. I think it's important for all cats, particularly those exposed to any animal that goes outside or if they go outside themselves.

The best parasite preventive for cats is Revolution Plus. It's a monthly topical applied to the skin at the base of the skull, back of the neck. They can't lick it off; it gets absorbed into the skin. It prevents common intestinal parasites and heartworm in cats and does an excellent job protecting against fleas and ticks.

If there is one recommendation for your cats for parasite prevention, it would be Revolution Plus.
